The effects of acoustic input feedback on presence in a virtual reality environment

*skrevet på engelsk, da projektet var på engelsk

Research background

The purpose of this research project is to investigate how acoustic input feedback affects presence within a virtual reality environment, the hypothesis being that it would enhance the sense of presence.

We investigated presence and ways to measure it.

Method and game

A prototype of a virtual reality environment implementing acoustic input feedback was developed with a user-centred design approach and tested using a between groups design. Presence was measured using a questionnaire.

The game was set in a forrest. Participants had to walk around and find sentences from Little Red Riding Hood and read them out loud. The acoustic feedback correlated with were the player were in the game.

Conclusion

The test results show that the acoustic input feedback does not affect presence within a virtual reality environment.
